What your child learns
- Read an expression as a sum of terms instead of applying BODMAS blindly
- Use brackets correctly and predict how they change an answer
- Evaluate multi-step expressions without sign mistakes
- Translate word statements into expressions (“3 more than twice a number”)
- Spot and fix the classic order-of-operations errors
Parent pointer
If your child gets 3 + 4 × 2 = 14, this chapter is the cure. The new book teaches expressions as “terms” — a genuinely better method than the BODMAS chanting we grew up with. Let them learn the new way; don’t force the old shortcut.

Quick questions parents ask
Is BODMAS wrong now?
Not wrong — but it’s a shortcut that breaks when children apply it blindly (especially with subtraction and division in a row). The “terms” view in Ganita Prakash gives the same answers with far fewer mistakes. The video shows both and when each helps.
This chapter looks easy — can we skip it?
Please don’t. Every later topic — letter-numbers, equations, fractions — silently assumes your child evaluates expressions correctly. Ten wrong answers in Class 8 algebra usually trace back to this chapter.
