What your child learns
- Explore patterns in numbers and predict what comes next — with reasons
- Play with digits: reversals, sums, and what stays the same
- Reason about odd and even numbers beyond “ends in 2, 4, 6, 8”
- Work through puzzle-style problems systematically instead of guessing
- Explain a pattern in words — the skill behind every olympiad answer
Parent pointer
Don’t treat this as a “fun filler” chapter. This is the closest thing in the NCERT book to Tallentex/Olympiad training — pattern-spotting and systematic reasoning. If your child enjoys this chapter, seriously consider a competitive exam this year; the aptitude is showing.

Quick questions parents ask
Will these puzzle questions come in school exams?
Yes — schools now set them, because the book teaches them. And they’re exactly the style Tallentex and IMO ask. A child who practises Number Play properly gets a head start on both.
My child solves these by trial and error — is that okay?
Trial and error is a legitimate start — mathematicians do it too. The upgrade this chapter teaches is organised trial: keep track, spot the pattern, then explain why. The video models that thinking out loud.
