Exam guide for parents
Science & Maths Olympiad Guide for Parents
The school Science and Maths Olympiads are the most widely attempted competitive exams in Indian schools. Here’s what parents of Class 6β8 students should know.
What are the school Olympiads?
Science and Maths Olympiads are run by independent organisations, usually through your child’s school between October and December. Most schools circulate a form in AugβSep; ask the class teacher if you haven’t seen one. Each organiser sets its own paper, so check the school’s notice for the exact pattern and date.
The usual pattern (Class 6β8)
- First round in school: around 50 multiple-choice questions in about an hour, usually with a reasoning section, a subject section and a harder section worth more marks
- A second round for the top scorers
- The syllabus follows the school curriculum β but questions test application, not recall
Olympiad vs school exam β the real difference
School exams ask “what is the formula?” Olympiads ask “yahan kaunsa formula lagega β aur kyun?” A child who scores 90% in school can score 50% in an Olympiad without practice. That’s normal, and fixable with the right kind of question practice. We’ve written a one-page guide for parents on exactly this:
