Olympiad (IMO / NSO) Guide for Parents
IMO (Maths) and NSO (Science) by SOF are the most widely attempted Olympiads in Indian schools. Here’s what parents of Class 6–8 students should know.
What are IMO and NSO?
The International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) and National Science Olympiad (NSO) are conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF), usually through your child’s school between October and December. Most schools circulate a form in Aug–Sep; ask the class teacher if you haven’t seen one.
Pattern (Class 6–8)
- Level 1 in school: ~50 MCQs, 60 minutes — Logical Reasoning + subject section + Achievers section (higher weightage)
- Level 2 for top rankers (Class 3 onwards)
- Syllabus follows the school curriculum — but questions test application, not recall
Olympiad vs school exam — the real difference
School exams ask “what is the formula?” Olympiads ask “yahan kaunsa formula lagega — aur kyun?” A child who scores 90% in school can score 50% in an Olympiad without practice.
